Gunung Kawi Temple

After passing through the gate and 315 steps on the river bank of Pakerisan river we will find  a very high historical value, Gunung Kawi temple. This Tourist object is located at the district of Tampaksiring about  40 km from Denpasar. Originally, the  name of Gunung Kawi is not yet known. But etymologically it comes from  the words Gunung and Kawi, which means the mountain and carving. So, the point is that there are carvings in the mountains or at the stone wall. According to the history,  Warmadewa dynasty was the most famous  among the kings who reigned in Bali.. King Udayana was from this  dynasty and he was the son of the Queen of Campa which was adopted by Warmadewa.  Udayana married Javanese princess named Gunapriya Dharma Patni. From this marriage born Airlangga and Anak Wungsu. After Erlangga died in 1041, in East Java the kingdom was divided into two. A Buddhist priest named Empu Baradah was sent to Bali in order that the island of Bali was  given to one of Airlangga’s son,  but it was rejected by Empu Kuturan. Furthermore Bali was ruled by king Anak Wungsu between the years 1029 - 1077 and under his command Bali was  a very fertile and peaceful land. After he died his ashes were kept in a temple at Gunung Kawi temple complex. The writing above the door which reads: "Haji Lumah Ing Jalu" means the King was buried in Jalu "equal to" spur "of the (rooster) that looks the same as" Kris ". The words Ing Jalu then can be interpreted as " Kali Kris "or Pakerisan river. The King buried in Jalu was reffered to as King Udayana. While writing" RWA Anakira "which means" Two Son "is probably the tomb of King Udayana, Anak Wungsu and four Anak Wungsu’s wives,  and the prime Minister. Opposite of the temple complex is located (residence or dormitory of the monks / Buddhist monks). Thie temples and monasteries on Mount Kawi were predicted from the 11th century AD
